Most taps on our run are standard household fittings, and the housing explains why. At the last census the suburb held 2,355 separate houses, and only 55 dwellings were approved across the five years before that, so the tapware is mostly decades old rather than new stock.

What a tap repair visit includes:

  • diagnosing the failed part, by tap type
  • replacing washers, O-rings, spindles or cartridges
  • checking the seat and the tap body for damage
  • turning the water back on and testing for leaks
  • tidying the site before we leave

A dripping tap is not an emergency on its own, but it wastes water and money every day it runs. Read on for what fails, what the law lets you do yourself, and when a repair stops being worth it.

Which Part Fails in Your Tap

Two tap types do the sealing differently: a washer tap closes on a rubber washer against a valve seat, and a mixer tap seals with a ceramic disc cartridge. Knowing which one you have points to the failed part.

A washer tap has separate hot and cold handles, and each handle winds around several turns. The washer sits at the foot of the spindle, carried down onto the seat by the jumper valve, and that rubber washer wears first.

A mixer runs hot and cold through one lever, a quarter turn most of the time. Inside is a ceramic disc cartridge, and when those discs wear, the whole cartridge gets replaced.

The replacement cartridge has to match your tap's brand and model exactly. Sizes and thread patterns vary between makes, so we identify the tap before ordering or fitting anything.

Still Dripping After You Turn It Off

A drip from the spout means the sealing part is done. That holds for both tap types, and it is the most common tap fault on our run.

Where the water shows up points to the part:

  1. Spout dripping, tap fully closed

the washer or the seat it closes onto in a washer tap, or the cartridge in a mixer.

  2. Water around the handle or the top of the tap

a tired O-ring or spindle seal, and these show up while the tap is open.

  3. A wet base or water under the bench

worn O-rings, a connection that has worked loose, or a body eaten through by corrosion or age.

A stiff or sticking handle is a related fault. Grit or wear inside the cartridge or on the spindle makes the lever hard to move, even when the tap still holds water.

Before the tap comes apart, the water shuts off at a stop valve under the fixture. No stop valve there? The meter tap turns clockwise instead, but check first that no appliance, your hot water unit included, depends on that supply.

Tap Washers, Cartridges and the Licence Line

The QBCC leaves exactly one tap task open to a householder: renewing a tap's jumper valve or washer. That is unregulated work for anyone with the needed know-how and skill, provided the result still complies with the standards.

Every other tap repair belongs to a licensed plumber. Fixing or replacing a tap fitting counts as minor work, which a QBCC licensee carries out without a permit or a Form 4, and fitting a complete new tap is licensed work outright.

Renters report the drip to the owner or manager straight away. Queensland's tenancy rules treat a repair the Act does not list as an emergency as routine, and the owner makes it in a reasonable timeframe.

If nothing happens, a Form 11 notice gives the property manager or owner a minimum of seven days to act. Our toilet repairs page covers the cistern side of the same rental rules.

When an Old Tap Is Past Repair in Keperra

The repair bill turns on the tap type, the part it needs, damage to the seat or body, and whether the water can be shut off at the fixture. You get the figure in a fixed quote once our plumber has seen the job, and the number of taps done moves it too.

Three things push a tap past repair:

  • a body split by corrosion or a heavy knock
  • a seat worn or pitted past reseating
  • a leak that persists once new parts are in

Age does most of the damage. Plenty of the suburb's water services went in with the 1950s subdivisions and still run under driveways and street kerbs. A washer tap on a postwar cottage has had decades of turning, and a mixer fitted to a Glengarry Road build of the 2000s is a different job again.

When a repair stops making sense, tap replacement is the next step, and choosing a new fixture is that page's job. For the wider picture of taps, cisterns and pan faults, start at the tap and toilet plumbing page.

Tap Repair Questions We Get Asked

Call (07) 3523 7121

Why is my tap still dripping when I turn it off?

The part sealing the water has worn out or been damaged. In a two-handle tap that means the washer, or the brass seat beneath it, and in a mixer it means the cartridge. Ring (07) 3523 7121 and we will fit the new part.

Why does my mixer tap feel stiff to turn?

Grit or wear inside the cartridge or on the spindle usually causes it. We replace the cartridge whole, matched to the make and model of your tap, and one visit covers the lot.

Is replacing a ceramic cartridge a licensed job in Keperra?

Yes, a cartridge is not on the QBCC's unregulated list, so a licensed plumber does the swap. The job counts as minor work, done without a permit or a Form 4.

How much does it cost to fix a leaking tap in Keperra?

The price turns on the tap type, the part required, seat or body damage, whether a stop valve sits at the fixture, and how many taps we do. You get the figure in a fixed quote once our plumber has seen the job.

Is a dripping tap wasting much water?

Yes, a slow drip sends thousands of litres down the drain year after year, and you wear that loss on your water bill. Urban Utilities will not credit it, because a concealed leak adjustment excludes water a tap wastes.
